Every Wednesday is early release in Orange County unless the district says otherwise, but "early" means different clocks at different schools. High school lets out first, and middle school is the latest bell of the day.

Orange County Public Schools dismisses early every Wednesday unless the district notes otherwise, and buses run one hour earlier, according to the OCPS Student Ridership Information page checked October 29, 2026. The district's 2026 to 2027 bell times file lists standard Wednesday dismissal at 2 p.m. for most elementary schools, 2:54 p.m. for most middle schools and 1:10 p.m. for most high schools.

What time is early release on Wednesday at OCPS?

The district's 2026 to 2027 bell times file lists these standard times, and the live OCPS School Directory showed the same Wednesday times for the schools checked October 29, 2026:

Most elementary schools start at 8:45 a.m., dismiss at 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and dismiss at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Most middle schools start at 9:30 a.m., dismiss at 4:04 p.m. on regular days, and dismiss at 2:54 p.m. on Wednesday.

Most high schools start at 7:20 a.m., dismiss at 2:20 p.m. on regular days, and dismiss at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

So the Wednesday cut is one hour at most elementary schools and 70 minutes at most middle and high schools.

The file carries a footer that reads "RO105 2026-27 DRAFT Bell Times - 5/5/2026 12:05 PM." That draft is still the latest bell times file OCPS has posted as of October 30, 2026, so times at any school could still change. If your pickup plan has no slack, check your school's listing in the School Directory or call the front office.

Which OCPS schools have different Wednesday times?

Several campuses break from the standard, according to the same file:

  1. Dillard Street Elementary dismisses at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.

  2. Students in grades 6 through 8 at schools that run from kindergarten through eighth grade, such as Arbor Ridge, Audubon Park, Blankner and Orlando Gifted Academy, dismiss at 2:04 p.m. Their kindergarten through fifth grade classmates leave at 2 p.m.

  3. Colonial 9th Grade Center dismisses at 12:54 p.m., and Winter Park 9th Grade Center at 12:48 p.m.

  4. Exceptional and alternative education schools have their own times, and a few, including Project Compass, Simon Youth Foundation and Universal Education Center, list no Wednesday early release.

That K to 8 detail catches families with siblings in one building. The older child may walk out four minutes after the younger one.

The regular day differs at those campuses too. The same file lists Dillard Street Elementary at 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., middle grades at the K to 8 schools at 8:42 a.m. to 3:04 p.m., Colonial 9th Grade Center at 7:10 a.m. to 2:04 p.m., and Winter Park 9th Grade Center at 7:10 a.m. to 1:58 p.m. The two elementary schools marked new for 2026 to 2027, Innovation and Ovation, follow the standard 2 p.m. Wednesday dismissal.

Why do OCPS high schools start at 7:20 a.m.?

Florida law set later start times, with an exit. Section 1001.42(4)(f), Florida Statutes, checked October 30, 2026, says that by July 1, 2026, middle schools may not start instruction before 8 a.m. and high schools may not start before 8:30 a.m. The next paragraph says a school board "shall be deemed in compliance" if it sent the Florida Department of Education a report by June 1, 2026, covering its start times, the strategies it considered, the cost and any unintended consequences.

OCPS middle schools already start at 9:30 a.m. under the 2026 to 2027 bell file. High schools start at 7:20 a.m., earlier than the 8:30 a.m. line in the statute. OCPS planned to keep its current times and file that report after a November 2025 survey drew 71,453 responses, with 60 percent opposing a change, the West Orange Times & Observer reported March 12, 2026. Those survey figures come from the newspaper's report, and the district pages checked for this story do not post them or confirm the report was filed.

One thing could change Wednesdays later this year. The 2026 to 2027 school calendar says, in its severe weather make up plan, that the superintendent may use "extended Wednesdays" as one alternative to meet the state's required instructional hours after a storm closure. That would be announced; nothing on the calendar changes Wednesday hours now.

Do OCPS buses run early on Wednesdays?

Yes. Buses run one hour earlier on early release days, and early release schedules are not shown as a separate schedule in the district's bus tools, the ridership page says. Expect the afternoon bus about an hour before its usual stop time on Wednesdays.

The easiest way to track the earlier run is the Versatrans My Stop app. The ridership page, checked October 30, 2026, says the app shows estimated arrival times and sends push notifications when your child scans a Student Bus Ridership ID card getting on and off the bus. It also warns that the times run about two minutes behind the bus because of GPS lag, so students should be at the stop 5 to 10 minutes early. Your login is the student's 10 digit OCPS ID and eight digit birth date.

Only students who live more than two miles from their zoned school are eligible for bus service, and families must complete a School Bus Registration Form every year, the page says. Bus questions go to the OCPS Transportation call center at 407 317 3800.

Are there Wednesdays with no early release?

The ridership page's "unless otherwise noted" means a Wednesday can be changed, but the 2026 to 2027 calendar PDF does not list any specific Wednesday exceptions. Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026, is a school day on that calendar, so the Wednesday rule applies, and Wednesday, May 26, 2027, is the last day of school. Some Wednesdays have no school at all: November 25, 2026 (Thanksgiving break), December 23, 2026, and December 30, 2026 (winter break), and March 17, 2027 (spring break).

Put together with the calendar, that leaves these early release Wednesdays between now and winter break: November 4, 2026, November 11, 2026, November 18, 2026, December 2, 2026, December 9, 2026, and December 16, 2026. The last one falls two days before the second marking period ends on Friday, December 18, 2026, which is also the deadline for 2027 to 2028 magnet and Scholastic Academy applications on the OCPS APPLY TODAY page.

After winter break, school resumes for students on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, so the first Wednesday back is January 6, 2027.

If your school's website or front office gives a different time than the district file, go with the school, since it controls your child's dismissal.
